Lloyd Messersmith was a college coach for many years.
Messersmith was All-State in football in college, captained DePauw's basketball team and played baseball. After graduating in 1928, he was a high school coach briefly, then was DePauw's head baseball coach and assistant football and basketball coach from 1931-1945. He left to become chairman of the health, physical education and recreation departments at Southern Methodist University, a role he held for 25 years. He also coached SMU's baseball team at one point.
