Lloyd Merriman, after serving in World War II, starring in baseball and football at Stanford University, and playing one season of minor league ball, played five seasons in the major leagues — three before and two after he spent much of 1953 piloting a Panther Jet on more than 80 combat missions in the Korean conflict.
