[edit] Biographical Information
Right-hander Lew Carpenter, a 29-year-old knuckleballer pitched in four major league games, all in a nine-day period for the Washington Senators, in early May of 1943. Lew didn't give up any runs and only one hit, but he did allow four bases-on-balls. This was Lew's total time in the major leagues.
Carpenter spent a total of eight seasons (1938-1945) in professional baseball and with the exception of his nine-day stay with the Senators, he spent the rest of his career in the minor leagues. To Lew's credit, only two of his seasons were spent in class B ball and the rest of his pitching was done in class A or better.
In Lew's eight-year minor league run, he put together six seasons of double-digit win records. His best year came in 1945 when he built a 22-2 record and a 1.82 ERA while pitching 208 innings for the pennant winning Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Association. Lew's 22 wins and 1.82 ERA were league-leading numbers.
Former Georgia Tech player Millie Thomas was interviewed and said that Lewis Carpenter later played for the Atlanta Crackers and broke the record for strikeouts. (No facts can be found to verify this claim).Oral History Spotlight
