[edit] Biographical Information

Lew Carl played one game for the 1874 Baltimore Canaries. He was a captain in the Civil War and began playing amateur baseball after the war, although he was in his 30's. He played amateur ball in Baltimore, MD through his middle 40's. His one game for the Canaries was when he was 39 years old, and the team was missing a couple of players.

After living in Baltimore for most of his life, he apparently moved to Newark, NJ for the last couple of years. He died there in 1885. Researcher Brian McKenna traced his birth date to be February 25, 1831, which makes him the oldest ballplayer for which a full birth date is known; Nate Berkenstock is thought to have been born in 1831, but his full birth date is still unknown.
