[edit] Biographical Information

Les Scarsella was a first baseman who played five years in the major leagues from 1935-40, and who had a very successful minor league career in Triple A. His obituary by The Sporting News says that he was in demand by the majors in 1944-45, but he turned them down, saying that he preferred to stay in the PCL.

Three of the five years in the majors were brief appearances, but in 1936 he hit .313 in 485 at-bats at age 22, on a Cincinnati Reds team that hit .274. The next year he hit .246 on a team that hit .254.

He was part of the great 1948 Oakland Oaks team, and was one of their "Nine Old Men".
