According to Sporting Life from October 15, 1898, Hopper pitched for the Steven's House team at Lake Placid, NY all summer, impressing onlookers with his work against teams that had good collegiate players. The article said he was from Ridgewood, NJ but a different part of the same issue said he was from Richmond.

Through 2011 there have been three other major leaguers with the last name Hopper. This was was the only 19th Century player.
