Larry Smith was 19 when he umpired in the Pioneer League in 1965. He was with the league from late March to early September when he was released. On January 4, 1966 he was signed by the California League and joined the league's crew. He umped in the league in 1966 and for part of the 1967 season but was put on the league's military list on July 16 after he was drafted. Smith was reserved for the 1968 season but was shipped out in March arriving in country on March 17, 1968. He was a Medical Corpsman in the Army's 11th Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of Private First Class. He was killed in action on August 23, less than a week shy of his 22nd birthday.
