Lamar Johnson played most of his nine-year major league career for the Chicago White Sox when they were rarely very good, hitting .300 three times. He was part of the "South Side Hit Men" in 1977, one year in which the White Sox did produce.
In 1989, he played for the St. Petersburg Pelicans of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He hit .372 in 25 games with the club. In the league's championship game against the West Palm Beach Tropics, he hit a home run and drove in three runs to help lead the Pelicans to the title. Johnson was named the Star of Stars', the name given to the MVP of the championship game. In 1990, Johnson again played for St. Petersburg Pelicans; he played in 7 games and batted .368 before the league folded.
