Pitcher Kyle Waldrop was a big part of Farragut High's 94-3 record in 2003-2004, being one of the top three high schools nationally each year. He went 10-0 as a junior. Teaming with Rob Catapano as a fine 1-2 duo, Waldrop hit .493 and slugged 1.061 as a senior. He scored 70 and drove in 67 in 140 AB. He also was 14-0 with a 0.15 ERA and 0.50 WHIP, striking out 118 in 91 innings. He joined Trevor Plouffe as the utility men on the first-team high school All-America team picked by Baseball America.
He was was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 2004 amateur draft, the 25th overall pick. Passing up a scolarship offer to the Vanderbilt University, Waldrop signed for a $1 million bonus. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Twins, going 3-2 with a 1.42 ERA in 7 starts and 4 walks in 38 innings before being promoted to the Elizabethton Twins, where he went 2-0 and posted a 3.24 ERA in 4 outings. Baseball America listed him as the #4 prospect in the Gulf Coast League and #3 in the Appalachian League.
He spent 2005 with the Beloit Snappers and was 6-11 with a 4.98 ERA in 27 starts, walking only 23 in 152 innings but allowing 182 hits. He began the next year with Beloit again and went 6-3 with a 3.85 ERA in 8 games before a promotion to the Fort Myers Miracle, where he went 3-2 with a 3.57 ERA in 8 appearances.
