The Kootenay and Washington league (also known as the British Columbia league and the British Columbia-Washington league) of 1897 had teams from Kaslo and Rossland, British Columbia, and Spokane, Washington. Nelson, British Columbia planned to field a team as well, but failed to do so. The league had played 29 of its 44-game schedule when the Rossland team went broke, and the league disbanded. The Kootenaian newspaper of Kaslo put up a trophy for the league championship, which was not awarded.
