[edit] Biographical Information

Klondike Bill Douglass is one of two major leaguers remembered with the first name "Klondike". The other is Klondike Smith. Neither was born in Alaska.

He was usually called "Bill Douglass", and occasionally "Klondike Bill".

Another player with the last name "Douglass" also has an unusual first name - Astyanax Douglass.

Klondike Douglass played nine years in the majors and hit .300 three times.

Defensively, he moved around the field, playing 342 games at first base, 250 at catcher, and 130 in the outfield (split mostly between left and right field). He also played a few games at third base and short.

He moved around from year to year - being mostly an outfielder in 1896, more often a catcher in 1897 than anything else, exclusively a first baseman in 1898, mostly a catcher in 1899-1901, and mostly a first baseman in 1902-04.

In the minors he was still playing at age 40. He managed in 1905.
