Kid Butler is listed as the third outfielder on the 1884 Boston Reds, although Tommy McCarthy actually appeared in more games in left field than Butler did. However, Butler was the third outfielder on the team in terms of total games appeared in all outfield positions.

Butler hit only .169, on a team that hit .236. All the other regulars hit at least .200. The team finished a respectable 58-51 on the season.

He is not to be confused with a later Kid Butler.
