 Biographical Information
Kevin Siegrist made the majors in 2013.
Siegrist was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 41st round of the 2008 amateur draft. He made his pro debut with the GCL Cardinals and gave up only 3 hits (also 3 BB, 3 R) in 13 innings. He was 1-0 with two saves and a 3.86 ERA for the 2009 Batavia Muckdogs. He split 2010 between the Johnson City Cardinals (4-3, 1.93) and Batavia (0-1, 7.29), with 7 games for each. In 2011, he pitched for the Quad Cities River Bandits (8-1, 1.15 in 9 G) and Palm Beach Cardinals (0-3, 3.42 in 11 G, 30 BB in 52 2/3 IP). Had he qualified (he was 4 2/3 IP shy), he would have led Cardinal farmhands in ERA. His 7 pickoffs were second in the St. Louis chain. The lefty held both lefties and righties to averages under .200 in 2012, split between Palm Beach (6-0, 2.28 in 10 G) and the Springfield Cardinals (1-2, 3.62 in 8 G). He was 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA in the playoffs, losing game 3 of the finals to the Frisco RoughRiders with 8 H and 4 R in 5 2/3 IP, even though he fanned Mike Napoli 3 times. With Surprise in the Arizona Fall League, he was a 2-1, 2.37 record and struck out 27 in 19 innings. He began 2013 in the bullpen with Springfield (1-1, 2 Sv, 2.25, 8 H, 7 BB, 35 K in 20 IP) then moved up to the Memphis Redbirds briefly (1-0, 1.17 in 5 G, 3 H, 9 K in 7 2/3 IP).
Called up to the majors, he replaced Maikel Cleto on the roster. In his major league debut on June 6, 2013, he relieved fellow rookie Seth Maness with a 14-2 deficit in the top of the 7th, one on and one out against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He allowed a run-scoring single to Gerardo Parra but struck out both Didi Gregorius and Eric Hinske. In the 8th, he retired Cody Ross and fanned two more, Josh Wilson and Jason Kubel. Keith Butler relieved him in the 9th. The Buffalo, NY native finished the regular season with a dominant 3-1, 0.45 record in 45 games pitched, with 50 strikeouts, 18 walks and only 17 hits allowed in 39 2/3 IP. Lefties hit .118 off him, righties not much better at .138. In the NLDS, he allowed one hit and one unearned run in a 7-1 loss to the Pirates in Game 2. With the Series tied at 1, he relieved fellow rookie Carlos Martinez with two on and one out in the bottom of the 8th, the game at 3-3. He faced Pedro Alvarez, who had only batted .180 versus southpaws in the regular season, but Alvarez delivered a game-winning single to score Josh Harrison. Russell Martin added a RBI single to plate Marlon Byrd before Siegrist got Gaby Sanchez to hit into a 5-4-3 double play. Siegrist did not pitch in the next two games as the Cards' starters were outstanding to give them the series.
