Kevin Ellis was a three-year starter at Baylor University. He led the Bears in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in as a sophomore and was team co-captain in 1992. He graduated in 1993 with a degree in telecommunications.

After signing a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs in 1993, Ellis -- then going by K.J. Ellis -- made his way through the organization’s minor league system, setting single-season home run and RBI records for the Huntington Cubs in 1993. While with the Daytona Cubs, he led the Florida State League in RBI in 1996. He advanced as far as the Cubs’ AAA Iowa Cubs in 1998.

Ellis went on to play for the Tri-City Posse and Chico Heat of the independent Western Baseball League, winning the league championship twice and leading the league in hitting in 1999.

Ellis began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at McLennan Community College in Waco, TX in 2004. He went on to be an assistant coach at Hill College in the spring of 2005, before becoming manager of the Graham Roughnecks of the Texas Collegiate League in the summer of 2005. He became an assistant coach at University of California, Riverside. He was an area scout (TX,OK,AR,MO,KS) with the Milwaukee Brewers for a time and currently (2010) holds the same position with the San Diego Padres.
