Pitcher Kenny Henderson was drafted in the first round (#5 overall) out of Ringgold High School by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1991 amateur draft. Henderson asked for a $1,000,000 signing bonus. When the Brewers countered with $500,000, Henderson enrolled in the University of Miami. Henderson had previously starred for team USA in the 1991 World Junior Championship. He was 1-1 with a 3.14 ERA for the Bronze Medalists, but struck out 24 in 14 1/3 innings, including 19 in a 3-hitter over Taiwan; it was Taiwan's lone loss in 9 games in the round-robin phase of the event. After his junior year, Henderson was drafted in the second round of the 1994 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos, but he returned to school. Henderson finally entered pro ball after being drafted in the 5th round of the 1995 amateur draft by the San Diego Padres.
Apparently preferring James Henderson in 1995, he pitched for the AZL Padres going 0-1 with an 8.22 ERA with a 6/12 BB/SO ratio in 8 IP, and for the Idaho Falls Braves he was 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 9/16 BB/SO ratio in 20 IP. Back to Kenny in 1996, he split the year between the Clinton Lumber Kings, where he was 0-3 with a 2.33 ERA and 5/26 BB/SO ratio in 27 IP, and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, where he was 1-1 with a 5.71 ERA and a 10/14 BB/SO ratio in 17 IP. Returning to Rancho Cucamonga in 1997, he was 1-2 with a 4.38 ERA and a 17/26 BB/SO ratio in 25 IP.
