 Biographical Information
Pitcher Kenny Baugh attended Rice University, going 13-2 with a 2.17 ERA and 168 strikeouts (a school record) in his senior year en route to being named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year. He was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the first round of the 2001 amateur draft. Baugh was signed by scout Tim Grieve and made his pro debut that summer.
Baugh began his professional career with the West Michigan Whitecaps, going 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in 6 starts before earning a promotion to the AA Erie SeaWolves, where he went 1-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 5 starts. However, a shoulder injury caused him to miss the entire next season. He returned to action in 2003, going 3-0 in 4 starts with the Lakeland Tigers before returning to Erie, where he went 7-9 in 19 outings. He was back at Erie again the next year, going 8-8 with a 3.71 ERA as a part of the SeaWolves rotation. Baugh moved up to the AAA level with the Toledo Mud Hens in 2005, notching a 3.38 ERA and tying for the team lead with 12 victories.
Following the 2005 campaign, Baugh was traded to the San Diego Padres for pitcher Ricky Steik. However, he never pitched in the Padres system after re-injuring his shoulder, and he was released on May 17, 2006. He was picked up by the Florida Marlins in 2007 but struggled with the Albuquerque Isotopes, posting a respectable 7-9 record despite an 8.19 ERA.
