[edit] Biographical Information
Kal Segrist played two years in the majors, had a minor league career and coached at Texas Tech University from 1965-87, serving as head coach from 1968-83.
He is also a trivia item - he was the injured player whom Brooks Robinson replaced in 1955 when Brooks made his major league debut.
Kal was the son of Kal Segrist, Sr., a Texas League player of the 1920s, who encouraged his son's development as a player. As early as age six, Kal Jr. was profiled in the Washington Post, where it said he had been prepping for a major league career since he was two. At age six he hit .340 on a kids' team and went 8-3 as a pitcher.
Kal the son was a star for an American Legion state championship team when he was 14 years old, and was on three high school state championship teams in 1946-48.
He was at the University of Texas at Austin in 1949-50, at the same time as Murray Wall and Charlie Gorin. The Texas team won a national championship each year. In 1951 he was signed by the pros and in 1952 he came to the majors.
He was hitting .291 with 17 homers for Kansas City in 1952 before coming up partway through the season to the majors. After being sent back to the minors, he ended up the season hitting .308 with 25 home runs. He stayed with Kansas City and in 1954 hit .291 with 15 home runs. In 1957 he was with Vancouver. In 1960 he hit .325 with 25 home runs in the Texas League.
As of last notice (2008), he is a rancher and also has a home in Lubbock, TX.
