Jumbo Davis, although remembered with the nickname "Jumbo", had enough speed in 1887 to lead the American Association in triples. Not much of a fielder, he had a major league lifetime fielding percentage of .824 at third base.
A baseball card from his days in Kansas City doesn't make him look particularly large - Davis card.
He also worked as an umpire in the 1891 American Association.
He was typically referred to as "Jim" (and sometimes "Big Jim") rather than "Jumbo". However, he is not to be confused with another Jim Davis, an amateur outfielder with the Knickerbockers in the days before pro ball.
In 1888 he saved a girl from drowning at Coney Island while his team was in town.
