Jud Smith, who played major league baseball in 1893, 1896, 1898 and 1901, was the first major leaguer to come from Ohio State University, which he attended in 1888-92.
Smith made his debut in 1893 after the Cincinnati team released Bob Caruthers, a two-way player who was hitting .292 at the time. Smith, who had been sitting on the bench, made his debut a few days after Caruthers was released. Smith was then traded to St. Louis before the 1893 season was over.
The book Low and Inside states that Smith was very superstitious and relates a tale from when Smith played for Syracuse in 1897.
He hit well in both 1896 and 1898, getting his most major league at-bats in 1898, when he had 234 at-bats and hit .303 with 5 triples and 3 homers.
He played for Buffalo in 1900.
After his major league days Smith played for Los Angeles, where he was a teammate of Gavvy Cravath and Dummy Hoy. In 1903 he led the team with 57 stolen bases. He was also at Toledo in 1902.
