Joseph Gardner began his professional career in the farm system of the Cleveland Indians.
He was drafted in the third round of the 2009 Amateur Draft (94th overall). Joe started his professional career in 2010 with the Lake County Captains and after a month moved up to the Kinston Indians. For the year, Gardner was 13-6 with a 2.75 earned run average. He struck out 142 in 147.1 innings pitched and posted a 1.113 WHIP. Joe earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending May 24 and was named to the CL Post-Season All-Star team.
On July 30, 2011, Gardner was one of four young players traded to the Colorado Rockies in return for Ubaldo Jimenez, alongside Drew Pomeranz, Alex White and Matt McBride.
