[edit] Biographical Information
Jose Arcia started his professional career as a pitcher. Arcia was a fielding star for the early San Diego Padres but offered little at the plate. The Padres chose him 9th in the 1968 expansion draft from the Chicago Cubs, who had drafted him in the 1967 Rule V Draft from the St. Louis Cardinals (Tulsa). He started at second base for the young Padres in 1969, hitting .215 with 11 doubles and 3 triples, and stealing 14 bases. In 1970, he moved to shortstop after the Padres acquired Dave Campbell from Detroit. He hit .223 that year with 3 triples, 17 RBIs and 3 steals. Arcia also played first base, third base and the outfield. The baseball card pictured here was inexplicably issued by Topps Chewing Gum in 1973; there is no record of Arcia ever playing in a regular season game for the Kansas City Royals. He did hit .256 in 119 games for the Omaha Royals in 1973, while leading American Association shortstops with 194 putouts and 384 assists.
