A cousin of Felipe Alou, Jesus Alou, and Matty Alou, pitcher Jose Sosa played parts of two seasons in the majors with the Houston Astros. He reached the majors with the club in 1975 and made his pro debut on July 22nd, taking a loss against the Montreal Expos. He got his first plate appearance on July 30th and clubbed a three-run home run off Danny Frisella of the San Diego Padres; in the same game, he recorded his only big league save. On September 8th, facing the Atlanta Braves, he earned his only win in the majors. Overall, in 25 outings that year, he went 1-2 for a 4.02 ERA, while going 3-for-9 at the plate.

In 1976, Sosa got into only 9 games for Houston, posting a 6.94 ERA. He pitched in the minors through 1978.
