José Miguel Pineda starred for the first Cuban national team of the Fidel Castro era, going 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in the 1961 Amateur World Series. He led the event in ERA and Cuba won the Gold Medal. He never pitched in the Cuban Serie Nacional, which was founded the next year, but did manage successfully there. He managed the Vegueros to the title in 1977-1978 and 1980-1981. He also piloted Pinar del Río to the Series Selectivas pennant in both 1979 and 1980. He managed Cuba to the Gold Medal in the 1983 Intercontinental Cup, 1983 Pan American Games and 1985 Intercontinental Cup. He guided Ciego de Ávila from 1981-1984.

In 23 seasons in Cuba, Pineda was 796-522; as of 2010, only Carlos Marti had won more games during the Castro era.
