Jorge Bishop signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in November 2008, with Rene Gayo and Manny Sanguillen as two of the three scouts credited for his signing. Though he was not one of Pittsburgh's higher-profiles signings that year, he had a dazzling pro debut. After 28 games for the VSL Pirates, second baseman Bishop was hitting .371/.438/.612 with 42 runs and 26 RBI in 28 games, stealing 17 bases in 19 tries. He had 13 walks to 8 strikeouts.
