The son of Tom Herr and brother of Aaron Herr, Jordan Herr was drafted in 2007.
Herr played basketball, baseball and football in high school. He hit .323 as a freshman, .360 as a sophomore, .406 as a junior and .365 as a senior. He enrolled at the University of Delaware, but after a year there, transferred to Pitt. He batted .263 and fielded .983 as an outfielder in 2007 and was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 41st round of the 2007 amateur draft.
