[edit] Biographical Information

Johnny Ryan played in the National Association from 1873 to 1875 and in the new National League in 1876 and 1877.

Johnny was born in 1853 in Philadelphia, PA. He got into two games with the 1873 Philadelphia Whites and then became a regular outfielder with the 1874 Baltimore Canaries. He was also a regular for the 1875 New Haven Elm Citys.

Although he had hit under .200 in 1874 an 1875, he was able to become a regular with the 1876 Louisville Grays of the brand-new National League, and hit four points above the team's batting average. In 1877, although he played a few games with the National League's Cincinnati Reds, he spent most of the season with a couple minor league teams based in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA.

Following his baseball career, Ryan was a Philadelphia police officer. He died when he was kicked by a prisoner after making an arrest following a barroom altercation.
