[edit] Biographical Information

Johnny "Patcheye" Gill played 23 years in the minors and six years in the majors.

Gill, an outfielder, got most of his major league playing time in his last season, with the 1936 Chicago Cubs for whom he was the fourth outfielder. He was the same age as Chuck Klein, who started the season with the Cubs but was traded to the 1936 Phillies.

Gill hit .321 during his minor league career with nearly 300 home runs. He and Joe Hauser were the top sluggers on the 1930-31 Baltimore Orioles and later with the 1935 Minneapolis Millers he banged out 43 home runs. He was with Portland from 1940-45 and as late as 1947 he was still a player-manager, hitting .396 in Class D baseball.
