Pitcher Johnny Almaraz played one season in the minor leagues, 1988. Taken by the Cincinnati Reds in the 14th round of that year's amateur draft, Almaraz donned the Billings Mustangs' uniform and went 5-5 with a 5.04 ERA in 13 games (nine starts). In 55 1/3 innings, he struck out 54 batters.

Throughout the 1990s, Almaraz worked as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds and San Diego Padres. In 2010, he became the Atlanta Braves' Director of International Scouting and Operations. He signed, among others: Adam Dunn, Johnny Cueto, Jason LaRue, B.J. Ryan, Jacobo Sequea and Marcos Mateo.

His brother, Joe Almaraz has managed in the minors and currently scouts. His nephew, Joseph Almaraz, was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2010 and the Atlanta Braves in 2011.
