John "Jack" Warner played 14 seasons in the big leagues, almost exclusively as a catcher. Warner, not much of a hitter, earned his keep with his defense and his ability to get hit by the pitch. Oddly, he seemed to get better with the bat as he aged - his best years as a hitter were his last.
He caught one of Christy Mathewson's no-hitters.
Interestingly, the similarity scores method shows the most similar player as Frank Bowerman, who alternated with Warner as the starting catcher on the New York Giants in 1900-01 and 1903-04.
After his days in the majors he played three years in the minors and also managed a couple minor league teams.
The book Baseball: A History of America's Game says that Warner was notorious for his efforts to make life miserable for Irish Catholic players.
He is buried in St. Mary Star of the Sea cemetery in Cedarhurst, NY.
Warner appears as a minor character in Eric Rolfe Greenberg's 1983 novel The Celebrant.
