[edit] Biographical Information
John Smith competed against two of the greatest 19th century players for playing time. He started in 1882 with the 1882 Troy Trojans, a team that featured Buck Ewing, Tim Keefe, Mickey Welch, and at first base, Roger Connor.
Connor had been the first baseman in 1881, but in 1882 he played at first, third, and in the outfield, while Smith had almost as many appearances at first base as Connor that year. Smith had a better fielding percentage.
Later that same season he came to the 1882 Worcester Ruby Legs, where he played in 19 games at first base. The regular that year at first base was Harry Stovey, the great 19th Century home run hitter.
He is one of several major leaguers by the name "John Smith".
