John Shoupe played three seasons in the majors for three different teams. His minor league career went through 1890. He was the first major leaguer born in West Virginia, although Jack Glasscock, born later in the state, came to the majors a couple days earlier.
John made his major league debut with the 1879 Troy Trojans, a team which featured Dan Brouthers, who was six years younger.
