[edit] Biographical Information
John Murphy pitched for the Altoona Mountain City and the Wilmington Quicksteps in the 1884 Union Association. He would go 0-6 for Wilmington, pitching 48 innings, then make somewhat of a turn-a-round with Altoona going 5-6 in 111 innings, to give him a 5-12 record while appearing in 21 total games for a 3.61 ERA.
Murphy also played cosiderably in the field, having an overall .810 fielding percentage in 40 games. He also appeared in 125 at bats with 16 base hits for a .118 average.
In 1886 John would appear with the Jersey City Jerseys in the Eastern League and also with the Scranton Miners in the Pennsylvania State Association; no records are currently available. In 1887, he would be with the Altoona, PA team, this time in the Pennsylvania State Association; again no records are curently available for this run.
Murphy seemingly gave up the sport, going to Philadelphia, PA where he worked as a shomaker until his death on March 7, 1905. His obituary mentioned he was a member of the Southwark Quoit Club.
