John Ericks was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st Round (22nd overall) of the 1988 amateur draft. In 1989, his first full professional season, he led the South Atlantic League and the entire minor leagues with 211 strikeouts while pitching for the Savannah Cardinals.
