John Cattanach pitched a game for the 1884 Providence Grays of the 1884 National League and pitched two more for the 1884 St. Louis Maroons of the 1884 Union Association.
John was born, and died, in Rhode Island. Also in 1884, he played for the minor league team in Willimantic, CT. Later, in 1885, he played for Columbus.
The 1884 Providence Grays won the pennant, with Old Hoss Radbourn pitching the majority of their games. Cattanach pitched five innings in his one outing for the team. Th 1884 St. Louis Maroons also won the pennant of their league, with Cattanach hurling 17 innings for them. Pitcher Charlie Sweeney also pitched for both teams that year.
