[edit] Biographical Information
John Barthold pitched four games in the majors for the 1904 Philadelphia Athletics. While his 5.06 ERA was not impressive (team star Rube Waddell had a 1.62 ERA that year), Barthold hit .333 and slugged 1.000 as a result of hitting a triple in three at-bats. He drove in a couple runs.
Barthold, born in Philadelphia, played a number of years for minor league teams in Pennsylvania and Delaware, and also played a season for the team in Peterborough, ON. He was the only former/future major leaguer on that Canadian team and he led the team in batting average.
A photo of Barthold with the 1908 Reading, PA team can be found here.
When Baseball Digest did an article on the major leaguers whose only hit was a triple, John Barthold was included.
