Before his sole major league season of 1875, John Abadie was the starting first baseman for the Eastons, a semi-pro team from Easton, PA that, in 1874, had defeated three major league calibre opponents -- the 1874 Athletics, the 1874 Whites and the 1874 Atlantics. With such success, they were a natural pool of talent to draw from when the National Association expanded from 8 to 13 teams in 1875. Other of Abadie's teammates on the Eastons in 1874 or previously who also played on major league rosters included pitchers George Bradley, Bill Parks, and Jim Devlin, catcher Tom Miller, third baseman Joe Battin, and shortstops Denny Mack and Chick Fulmer. With an equally large contraction back down to 8 teams in 1876, however, Abadie and many others were kicked back to semi-pro ball permanently.
Abadie had been the first player, listed alphabetically, until Hank Aaron's debut in 1954.
