Nineteen-year-old pitcher John Edelman left West Chester University of Pennsylvania when he was signed to a $20,000 Bonus Baby contract by the Milwaukee Braves on May 31,1955. He had been at the University in 1954-55 along with Howie Bedell.
The 6' 3" right-hander had no decisions in five appearances that year, allowing seven base hits and eight walks in five innings. He made his last appearance on September 21, 1955 for the Braves in 1955 and on June 22, 1956 he was released by the Milwaukee Braves.
John was picked up as a free agent by the New York Giants in 1956 and spent the season with the Johnstown Johnnies of the class A Eastern League, going 3-3 with a 5.75 ERA, appearing in 20 games. Edelman was back in the Eastern League in 1957, this time with the Springfield Giants, going 1-3 in six games and his professional baseball career was over at age 21.
John never returned to pro ball but he did return to West Chester University to earn a degree in education, graduating in 1958. He ultimately became a schoolteacher and coach and led his old Haverford High School team to a championship in 1968. Edelman had attended Haverford High in Haverford, PA and been part of a league championship team in 1953.
