Strain started out in the minors hitting .333 for Great Falls in 1976, and followed that up with a .338 batting average for Fresno in 1977. He hit around .300 for Phoenix in each of 1978-79. In 1982 he hit .293 for Iowa.
He managed for seven years in the Northwest League.
