The son of Joe Schultz, catcher Joe Schultz may have actually gotten his start in 1931. As the batboy for the Houston Buffaloes, which his father was managing, Schultz may have pinch hit in a regular season game at only 13. Schultz got his real start for the 1936 Albany Travelers. He lasted until 1948.
Schultz was then a coach for the St. Louis Browns in 1949. He managed in the minors from 1950 to 1962, then was a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1963 to 1968.
Schultz was the famed manager of the 1969 Seattle Pilots immortalized in Jim Bouton's "Ball Four". Quoted in the book about the art of bunting: "Boys, bunting is like jacking off. Once you learn how you never forget."
Schultz was a coach for the 1970 Kansas City Royals, then coached 3rd base from 1971 to 1976 for the Detroit Tigers, replacing Alfred "Billy" Martin as manager to finish the 1973 season.
