[edit] Biographical Information

Joe Schaffernoth played three seasons in the majors, appearing in 74 games. With the 1960 Cubs he posted a 2.78 ERA in 33 games.

Joe was born in Trenton, NJ and went to high school there. Signed as a free agent in 1956, he immediately went 21-6 at age 18 for the Paris Lakers. He eventually pitched eight years in the minors, going 68-52.

In 1959 he spent part of the season in the minors, with an ERA of 0.98 in 55 innings for Fort Worth. In 1960 he also was in the minors for part of the year, posting an ERA of 2.52 and a record of 8-2 for Houston.

He started one game in his major league career, on April 18, 1959. He didn't make it out of the first inning. He walked Wally Moon, gave up a single to John Roseboro and 2 more singles to Duke Snider and Don Demeter. He was then replaced by John Buzhardt. It was Buzhardt who took the loss as the Cubs later tied the game but eventually lost, 8-7.
