Joe Rue served in the Marines during World War I.
Rue began his career in the Western Association in 1921, then retired. He returned in the Piedmont League in 1926. Rue then worked the Virginia League (1926-1927), American Association (1928-1932), Pacific Coast League (1933-1934), and AA again (1935-1937). Rue was then an American League umpire from 1938 to 1947.
