Despite never reaching the majors as a player, Joe Macko was a Chicago Cubs coach in 1964. His son, infielder Steve Macko, later played for the Cubs before tragically dying of cancer at age 27.

He was a minor league 1B/3B from 1948-1964 and also played briefly in 1970, hitting .272 with 306 HR, 1198 RBI in 1987 games. He played in the Cleveland Indians chain from 1948 to 1956, and the Chicago Cubs chain from 1957 to 1964. He managed the St. Cloud Rox in the Northern League in 1961, the Wenatchee Chiefs in the Northwest League in 1962 and 1964, and the Amarillo Gold Sox in the Texas League in 1963.

Macko was the GM of the Dallas-Fort Worth Spurs in 1970 and 1971 before becoming the clubhouse manager for the Texas Rangers.
