Joe Brown was General Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1956 to 1976 and was interim GM of the club in 1985.
Brown started in baseball as assistant business manager for the Lubbock Hubbers in 1939. He was president of the Waterloo Hawks in 1941. Brown spent 3½ years in the Air Force during World War II, then was the publicity director for the Hollywood Stars in 1946-1947. He was the GM for the Zanesville Indians in 1949, Waco Pirates in 1950, and New Orleans Pelicans in 1951. He was president of the Pelicans in 1952-1954, moving to the Pirates doing special administrative and scouting jobs during 1954.
Brown is the son of stage and movie comedian Joe E. Brown.
