Joe Kirrene went to Christian Brothers High School. He played semi-pro ball for the Sacramento Smokeys. He led the Western League in 1954 with a .343 batting average.

Kirrene played one game at age 18, and then came back at age 22 to have an on-base percentage of .448 in 9 games. He was four years younger than Nellie Fox.
