[edit] Biographical Information
Joe Connolly was the hitting star of the miracle 1914 Boston Braves who won the 1914 World Series. During the regular season, he had the highest batting average and slugging average among the regulars. He also played well in 1913 and 1915 before dropping off in 1916.
He was a left-handed hitter who usually was used against righty pitchers. He often batted third in the order.
He began playing independent ball in 1906, and graduated to the minors in 1908. He tried as a pitcher, but became a hitter instead in 1911. He won a minor league batting crown that year.
After having his batting average drop off in 1916, the Braves sold him to Indianapolis, and he decided he could make more money by farming and playing semi-pro ball locally. He played semi-pro ball through 1928.
He became a politician after baseball, serving in the Rhode Island state legislature and then as a state senator.
