In his only major league appearance, on August 4, 1945 for the Washington Senators, Joe Cleary gave up seven runs while getting one out. His career ERA is 189.00, the highest among all players who got at least one out. In his one appearance, he was replaced on the mound by Bert Shepard, who also made his sole major league appearance in the game.

Forty major-leaguers were born in Ireland: 39 were born in the 19th century, and Cleary in the 20th.
