Joe Gunson, from Philadelphia, played for five major league teams in four years, mostly at catcher. With the 1892 Orioles he backed up Wilbert Robinson; Robinson was in 87 games at catcher while Gunson was in 67.
After his major league days he played for several years in the Eastern League and in the Atlantic League.
A sketch of his face and upper body was featured on p. 1 of Sporting Life, July 24, 1889, with the caption "J.B. Gunson, The Rising Young Catcher of the Kansas City Club".
