 Biographical Information
Joe Cannon, who was a first-round draft pick in January 1974, was in the majors from 1977 to 1980.
Cannon moved his way up the Houston Astros organization from 1974-1977, hitting .306 with 39 stolen bases for Charleston in 1977. He made his major league debut on September 22, 1977, and appeared in 9 games for the Astros that year. He was four years younger than pitcher J.R. Richard.
In 1978 he was mostly in the minors with Charleston again, this time hitting .293 with 18 triples. He had 8 games in the majors. After the season was over, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, who had just finished their second year as a franchise.
Joe got most of his major league at-bats with the 1979 Blue Jays, a team which had the 39-year-old Rico Carty at DH and the 20-year-old Danny Ainge at second base. He also appeared in 59 games at Syracuse.
Joe did not appear in the minors in 1980, playing in 70 games for the Blue Jays but getting only 50 at-bats. In 1981 and part of 1982 he was at Syracuse again, and spent part of 1982 with Knoxville. 1983 was with Kinston as by now he was descending the ladder he had earlier ascended.
After years of coaching, he became a manager in 1991, and managed during 1991-1997 and 1999-2002.
