Jimmy Journell was selected in the 4th round of the 1999 amateur draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He shared the 2001 Carolina League Pitcher of the Year Award with Trey Hodges of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Pitching for the Potomac Cannons, he led the league with a 2.50 ERA in 151 innings and struck out 156 batters while compiling a record of 14-6. He made one additional start with the AA New Haven Ravens that season and pitched a 7-inning complete game no-hitter on September 2. He was considered the top prospect in a depleted Cardinals farm system but had only a brief major league career. Injuries cut short his 2002 campaign after only 17 starts between AA and AAA, and he was moved to the bullpen in 2003, where he was less dominant. He had brief trials in St. Louis in both 2003 and 2005, and was limited to only 4 appearances at AAA Memphis in 2004. His overall Major League record was an uninspiring 0-1, 7.43 in 12 games over two seasons. He retired after the 2005 season.
