Shortstop Jimmy Cooney played three years in the majors, beginning in 1890, the year of three leagues. He was a regular in 1890-91 with the Chicago Colts.

Jimmy is the father of Johnny Cooney and Jimmy Cooney. Jimmy, Sr. died at age 37 and thus was unable to see his son Jimmy also play shortstop for the Chicago team in the 1920's.
